RECEPTION: Wednesday August 3, 6-8 PM
I’ve always made my living as an artist, working in a number of media and pursuing a variety of endeavors. In the 1970s to the 1990s, I was a video artist and documentary filmmaker. Later I began pursuing fine art photography. I began painting in earnest in 1998, after a transformative experience filming an exceptional landscape painter working at dawn in the dunes of Cape Cod. For several years I painted oil impressionist landscapes and studied with a number of artists, including Robert Hunter Douglas, Lois Griffel, Samuel Barber and Joan Hopkins Coughlin.
I became more and more drawn to contemporary art and began experimenting with different techniques and motifs. I created a number of large pixilated portraits. For the past several years, I have focused completely on non-objective work and continue to explore that path. I began exhibiting my paintings in 2009.
My process is deliberately simple, and guided entirely by intuition, a contemplative dialogue with the painting as it develops. Using basic elements of color, tone, and line, each painting evolves through meditative exploration, into a particular atmospheric mood. I seek to convey, first and foremost, a feeling.
