New Afro-Brazilian Drumming & Percussion Class

On Sunday February 22 professional percussionist Brandon Marger will begin teaching a weekly Afro-Brazilian Drumming & Percussion class at Estudio ‘El Bohio’ in Hadley MA. The class will initially focus on the history and development of Samba. In the future the class will explore many other styles of Afro-Brazilian drumming and percussion, including the instruments, rhythms and songs of Capoeira Angola, Maculelê, Candomblé, Forró, Maracatú and more.

The cost of the class will be $10 per class, payable at the end of each class (cash only please). There is nothing to sign up for, and no deposit to pay up front. The class will take place Sunday afternoons from 4:00 – 5:30 PM. 

This Afro-Brazilian Drumming & Percussion class is a project of the Brasileiros no Pioneer Valley group, whose goal is to create a sense of community among the many Brazilians scattered throughout the Pioneer Valley and Springfield areas of Western Massachusetts. In the coming year, the Brasileiros no Pioneer Valley group would like to be able to do some traditional social events such as rodas de samba. Looking to the future, they are interested in the possibility of creating a small samba group to perform during next year’s carnaval season, and maybe even at some local events relating to the 2016 Summer Olympic Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro.
