The East and West galleries play host to the large-scale oil paintings and acrylic sketches of emerging artists Amanda Hill and Keri Kimura. As the Center plans to close its doors in the spring of 2013, the exhibition marks a final chapter in the history of gallery space dedicated to showing visual artists from the community. The public is invited to an Arts Night Out opening reception on Friday, January 11, 5-7pm.
Hill's work uses the imagery of mechanical parts scavenged from disembodied automobiles. The gears and moving parts in her pieces evoke a living energy that plays well against the abstracted figuration of Kimura's fleshy forms inhabiting brushy, dream-like landscapes. Kimura’s paintings reference 19th century romanticism in color and composition and invoke themes of intimacy and exposure.
Amanda Hill and Keri Kimura graduated from Smith College in 2010 with majors in studio art. Both spent several years in New York City and Providence, Rhode Island where they devoted time to a variety of professional activities including large-scale installation work, mural-making, and arts administration. The pair have spent six months creating the series of paintings that are featured in OVER OUT. This is their first joint exhibition. It is made possible by support from the Northampton Arts Council.
Regular gallery hours are 11am-4pm, Tuesday through Friday.
