Northampton born artist, Travis Weitzman will show new work at UNITE, 202 Main St. Northampton MA, in a show titled Transformation of Purpose. There will be an opening reception Friday August 12th from 6-9 P.M. in conjunction with the Northampton Arts Night Out.
Travis Weitzman has been studying fine art and photography at the Art Institute of Boston for the last two years. He has always been interested in the natural world around him, and especially the relationship we all have with it. Never afraid to try a new medium, Travis has explored, woodworking, collage, photography, music, video, ceramics, printmaking, drawing and painting. This show explores ideas about: the assignment of purpose, our concepts of nature and what constitutes something as natural. Observing the process of transformation that is constantly taking place, has inspired Travis’ alternative approach in the darkroom. By turning his attention to man-made found objects that have lost their function, Travis tries to understand and examine our relationship and impact upon the land. His process in the darkroom echoes the subjects he photographs and resonates themes of chance, the passage of time, and the re-purposing of materials. Each work is a unique photograph created through chance, layering and the imperfection inherent in improvisation.
