Event Synopsis:
BIG INK is pleased to partner with Zea Mays Printmaking for two days of large-scale woodblock printing. You are invited to submit a proposal to participate! We will be utilizing BIG INK's giant mobile etching press to pull prints. If accepted, artists have two months prior to the event to carve their image into a piece of plywood. All consumable materials including paper, ink, cleaning supplies and equipment usage are included. Participants are only required to bring a fully carved and ready to print woodblock on their assigned day.
About BIG INK:
BIG INK's mission is to inspire a greater public appreciation for large-scale woodblock printmaking and extend its practice. The program was started in 2012 by Lyell Castonguay and Carand Burnet as a way to spread their passion for the medium with other artists and the general public. BIG INK works by establishing a temporary print shop on site at partnership organizations, most often at museums, universities, art centers, studios, and galleries. Artists are selected, either by personal invitation or through a call-for-entry process, to attend these events and print original woodblocks at least 24” x 36” in dimension. Since the program’s inception, hundreds of artists have participated in BIG INK events across the country.
Established in 2000, Zea Mays Printmaking is dedicated to research, practice, and dissemination of safe printmaking. Zea Mays Printmaking offers studio access, workshops, residencies, internships, mentorships and contract printing services to an international community of artists. Demonstrating the high quality and creative possibilities of original prints made with health consciousness is at the core of Zea's mission. 100+ member artists work at Zea Mays Printmaking in intaglio, relief, serigraphy, photopolymer, monotype, collagraph and mixed media printmaking.
