The public is invited to an Arts Night Out opening reception on Friday, September 14, 5-8 pm in the East Gallery.
BIG INK features the large woodcuts of Lyell Castonguay, Eben Kling, Chris Millette and Ali Osborn. The exhibition is an interpretation of how scale changes the context of an image. The artists' combined effort has produced over 10 works, ranging in size from 2' x 4' to 3' x 6'. Incorporating a variety of aesthetics, the show includes the misfit characters of Kling and the mythical visions created by Millette, among others.
Coinciding with the Arts Night Out opening, there will be an outdoor woodcut workshop on the front lawn of the Unitarian Society of Northampton at 222 Main Street. From 4pm-8pm, seven large woodcuts made by local artists will be hand-printed. The event is free, family friendly, and an excellent opportunity to learn about how woodcuts are carved and printed.
As Castonguay explains, “The objective of the BIG INK exhibition and workshop is to promote woodcut as an enduring artistic process. Woodcut has changed little in the centuries but remains a vital medium that is explored by new generations of artists. Monumental woodcut is a modern invention that challenges the traditional idea of a print.”
This woodcut workshop is supported in part by a grant from the Northampton Arts Council, Inc.
