Easthampton artist Marty Klein combines decades of amateur photography and a profound appreciation of nature in the new medium of scanography. “Botanica”, at the Northampton Center for the Arts, is an exhibit of prints featuring botanical themes showcasing Klein’s recent work.
In 2006, he began experimenting with using a flatbed scanner as his camera and plants and other natural objects (many locally gathered) as subjects. The resulting images revealed details in an exciting way, different than what he could achieve with his camera. Since then, he has continued to develop and refine this technique to produce a portfolio of stunning and original works.
“In my work, I strive to portray essences, the glories of natural forms and colors, the familiar and the less-seen details. Fueled by my deep connection to 'green world,' and an insatiable and wide-ranging curiosity, nature’s marvels and mysteries inspire me daily. The natural world is my sanctuary...a place for refuge and discovery. Foraging for wild foods, land protection, environmental education and gardening are among my interests. The lure of the unexpected and the surprises that invariably appear in nature, entice me...invite me to linger a moment longer and look a little closer. The medium I have chosen to pursue suits me well.”
