"It is like cubism in abstract architectural dimensions," says Lourdes Morales of the paintings in her February exhibition at the Center’s East Gallery. "I use mass and planes to 'cut' the ornate vortex. There are no recognizable spaces."
Morales' work draws from her Latin background, inspired by Mexican and Columbian art culture as well as Barroco-Gothic and Churrigueresque architectural styles. She describes these vibrant, geometric works as, "a puzzle of forms and spaces of air filled with furious liberty."
Morales studied art at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Columbia. After completing her graduate work at the Institute Taller de Umberto Giangrandi, she organized a group to study works of art at the Prado Museum in Madrid. Her paintings have been shown internationally including exhibitions in Mexico City, Madrid, and Bogotá. In 1994 her work was part of a group exhibition which traveled to four capitals throughout Europe.
Join us for an opening reception Friday, February 12 from 5pm-7pm. Regular gallery hours are 11am-4pm, Tuesday through Friday.
