Interludes: a collection of new works
by Cheryl Rezendes
May 6 through June 27
Reception: Saturday, May 7, 4-6pm
Music: Rosemary Caine, Harp
Bernardston artist Cheryl Rezendes has a very hard time wearing just one hat: Fiber Artist, Mixed Media Artist, Painter, Collage Artist, Clothing Designer, Author, Shibori Silk Scarf Dyer, and Teacher, are just a few titles to start the list. In May & June Rezendes will show a collection of new works at Salmon Falls Gallery that were created during the time of her father’s illness and after his death. “Interludes speaks to the moments of understanding and peace that came to me in between the crushing and painful bouts of grief,” explained Rezendes. “My father and I shared a great love for the complex beauty of the New England landscape. The imagery in these works is taken from the time I spent over the past 12 months wandering the woods near my home in search of the meaning of life and love.”
The works in this exhibit fall into the broad category that some call Art Quilts. Rezendes prefers Mixed Media on Fiber or Fiber collage. Art quilting does not accurately describe her process. Rezendes does not just quilt, she hand dyes, paints and digitally prints her own images on cloth; in essence creating the very fabrics from which she will make a wall piece. In 2013 her book titled: Fabric Surface Design: Painting, Stamping, Rubbing, Stenciling, Silk Screening, Resists, Image Transfer, Marbling, Crayons & Colored Pencils, Batik, Nature Prints, Monotype Printing was published. It is a weighty volume filled with easy to do techniques allowing anyone to create their own unique fabrics at home. The list of techniques explained in the book shows just how much expertise Rezendes brings to her art. Salmon Falls Gallery has carried the diaphanous silk scarves she hand dyes and her quilted wall works for a number of years. This will be her first solo exhibit at the gallery.
Meet the artist, Saturday, May 7, 4-6pm, at her reception with music by harpist Rosemary Caine. The reception is part of the first Art Walk of the year in Shelburne Falls. For directions and more information go to www.SalmonFallsGallery.com.
