Event Description
Elizabeth Stone merges her background in fashion with her passion for art in DRESS/UNDRESS, a unique exhibition of figurative work. A favorite red party dress appears as if disembodied in a pastel painting. It reappears in a triptych called "Striptych" unbuttoned and slipping to the floor, and then finally emerges in 3-D as a floating white muslin dress. The show is in the East Gallery of the Center for the Arts from November 6 through December 2. The public is invited to an Arts Night Out opening reception
on Friday, November 9, 5-7pm.
Elizabeth Stone is a contemporary realist who paints at her home studio in Florence, Massachusetts. She began painting in the late 1990’s when she inherited her grandfather’s set of pastels. Elizabeth paints in oils and pastels, draws in charcoal, and has recently taken up sculpture. Still life, figure and portraiture are her favorite subjects. Her portraits are said to convey emotional resonance beyond surface detail.
"My hunger for color and for visual beauty must come from my grandfather who was an artist, my father who is always drawing, and my former career in the fashion industry,” says Elizabeth. "Although I’ve always felt I was an artist, I have taught myself to paint over the past 15 years by seeking master artists’ workshops. Clothing has always been my artistic expression. Now it is the subject of my art."
Regular gallery hours are 11am-4pm, Tuesday through Friday. The Gallery is also open during selected public events on the weekend. Please call the Center for details.
