Reception: Arts Night Out, Friday October 14, 5-8 PM
The Northampton Arts Council and the Hosmer Gallery present a juried exhibition on the theme of water. Juror David Teeple created the winning design for the Bridge St. railroad bridge, which represents the Connecticut River and will be unveiled in October as well. For this exhibition, he chose works by 37 Pioneer Valley Artists. Media range from painting and drawing to photography, sculpture, dance, video, and fiber art.
Mr. Teeple sought artists whose work engages, inspires and celebrates the life affirming properties of water, while also addressing the water challenges facing the planet. The goal of this exhibition is to initiate a dialog between artists and the community, to demystify and provoke the many facets of this most elusive and essential compound. Topics include, but are not limited to, beauty, recreation, agriculture, energy, symbolism, mythology and weather. How can the science of water be communicated through a work of art? What impact is the global water crisis having on us locally? What impact does pollution have on our drinking water? What are the politics behind the water crisis, and can art make a difference? The undercurrent of the exhibition is one of inquiry and optimism.
