Fractured: The Modern Nude explores the nuances of the fragmented body in modern photography and drawings from the collection of University Museum of Contemporary Art. Curated by 2014 MA in Art History candidates Brittany Mayo and Maureen McVeigh, the exhibition asks its audience to think about the way they perceive the body when they are confronted with a part rather than the whole: What is the subject of the work: that which is seen or unseen?  Including works by Diane Arbus, Ralph Gibson, Philip Pearlstein, and Andy Warhol, the exhibition opens on March 26, 2014. An opening reception featuring a gallery talk by the exhibition’s co-curators and Professor Karen Kurczkynski will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2014, from 5-7 pm.

Fractured: The Modern Nude is presented as the culmination of the 2013-2014 University of Contemporary Art Curatorial Fellowship, a yearlong independent study conducted in collaboration with the Art History Program in the Department of Art, Architecture, and Art History. The fellowship entails all aspects of producing an exhibition, including grant writing, researching the UMCA’s permanent collection, and developing concepts and theoretical underpinnings. The success of this program is made possible through the support and guidance of Loretta Yarlow (Museum Director), Eva Fierst (Curator of Education), Justin Griswold (Collections Manager), Nancy Noble (Lecturer in Art History) and Karen Kurczynski (Assistant Professor of Art History).
