"With Paper and Pins"
Opening: Monday, January 24, 5-7pm
My work explores states of fragmentation that create tensions in the relationship of the parts to the whole, in terms of material, space, and metaphor. I pursue issues of time, duration and accumulation via large drawings, installation, and video. In these pieces I engage with the uniquely human impetus to record what hovers between necessity and impossibility.
I make work about opposition and about contingency. Through various forms, I explore archive and map-making, particularly the state of flux devolving everything we attempt to register in time, and that which accumulates in our drive to map what is not possible to record.
Process is central to my work. The materials, though variable, share a quality of accessibility and simplicity. I value the tactile transformation of my selected materials, such as white glue drying to form a solid dimensional form of its own, or paper pulp setting in clumps and ripples, pins marking imagined territories, and the straightforward quality of pencil to paper.
