By William Shakespeare
Directed by Daniel Elihu Kramer
Henry V is Shakespeare's deepest exploration of the experience of warfare. What does it cost to transform yourself into a soldier? How do you convince others, or yourself, to return to a killing field? How must soldiers transform themselves again when they return to civilian life? Produced countless times on stage and in film, Henry V has been interpreted alternatively as pro-war and anti-war. Director Daniel Elihu Kramer's production features an all-female cast, and focuses on the experience of battle, the image of the soldier as the masculine ideal, and the growing role of women in our fighting forces. Kramer joined the Smith College Theatre Department faculty in September 2009 as Assistant Professor of Acting/Directing. A professional director and playwright, much of his recent work has focused on contemporary production of Shakespeare. In 2009, he completed his first feature film, Kitchen Hamlet, a contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet. In 2008, his production of The Pillowman at the Contemporary American Theatre Company received awards for Best Production and Best Direction. He also received a 2007 Elliot Norton Award for Outstanding Production for A Midsummer Night's Dream at Boston Theatre Works.
