Intaglio: A printing process that uses an etched or engraved plate; the plate is smeared with ink and wiped clean, then the ink left in the recesses is transferred to a dampened piece of paper by way of a press.
Interactive Intaglio is a community event designed to increase public awareness of Intaglio printmaking within the Pioneer Valley. On July 8 from 5-9pm in front of The First Churches of Northampton we will assemble an outdoor print studio complete with a portable etching press and a staff of dedicated printing enthusiasts. Three local printmaking studios are involved: Zea Mays Printmaking, Wingate Studio, and Red Horse Press, who have volunteered time, expertise, and equipment to the project. Artists in each studio have donated Intaglio plates to be printed the day of the event and there will be an opportunity for community members to engage in spontaneous printing from Intaglio plates created by volunteers. Interactive Intaglio allows the public to witness the process and learn the history of Intaglio printmaking. The event is a public arts performance that promotes community awareness for Intaglio printmaking while being entertaining and educationally engaging.
Many individuals have volunteered to help at the day of the event. Companies such as Graphic Chemical, Akua Inks, and Atlantic Paper Company have all generously donated supplies for the event. Our hope is that public printing, of any technique, become a mainstay in our community and encourage individuals to utilize the vast artistic resources available in the pioneer valley. This event is made possible in part by funding from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the Northampton Arts Council.
