This exhibition showcases both the work of Janine Gugler and her daughter Rachel Gugler, a member of Zea Mays Printmaking. Janine’s pieces featured in this exhibition were largely created in 1987 while developing viscosity printmaking at William Hayter’s Atelier 17 in Paris. They are lithographs and viscosity prints. Rachel’s new works on view are monotypes using collograph, collage, and etching; and like her mother Rachel utilizes viscosity printmaking techniques.

This show is an exciting opportunity to see the works of a mother and a daughter, the ways in which their works diverge and also how they intersect. In the words of artist Rachel Gugler, “What my mother passed on to me was more than a life saving strategy.  It was a way of life, a way of seeing the world and a way of committing to the artistic process.  My mother’s works are deeply serious and even chilling.  Her works that are being shown in this exhibition are lithographs and viscosity prints. My works have humor and lightness.  Together we show a world we live in. We both work in black and white and color:  Exploding aquamarine orbits translating to an homage to Max Ernst; Blue square plants with black drawn lines and finely tuned etched collages on large Japanese papers.”
