My philosophy of painting is to paint what one knows and loves.
What’s not to love about a flower?!?
Flowers have been revered throughout history. Paleobotanists have discovered that flowers were placed at the grave sites of Neanderthals. The Romans had festivals dedicated to honor the goddess Flora. Religious paintings of the Renaissance utilized flower symbolism to enhance their meaning. The Victorians expanded that lexicon to include dozens of flowers… for example ‘Camellia Japonica’ represents “unpretending excellence”!
I am no ‘Camellia Japonica’ but I have enjoyed every minute of creating this group of 14 paintings that represent blooms from my gardens in Massachusetts and Arizona. Looking closely at these flowers triggers an intimacy and a meditation that totally satisfies my soul.
