For more than fifty years, during both the apartheid and postapartheid eras, South African literature has had an intricate and complex relation to its political context. The panel will discuss the demands and challenges of this relationship, considering the work of writers such as Nadine Gordimer, J. M. Coetzee, Njabulo Ndebele and Zakes Mda, who will also read from his work as part of the event.
