Mapping Pattern: Victoria Burge and Louise Kohrman at A.P.E. Ltd. Gallery
Northampton, MA - A.P.E. Ltd. Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibit of new works on paper by Victoria Burge and Louise Kohrman, Mapping Pattern. The exhibition opens on Tuesday, September 4 and runs through Sunday, September 30, 2012. The opening reception is Friday, September 14 from 5 – 8 PM.
This two-person exhibition will present unconventional, contemporary works on paper (prints and drawings) that explore themes of patterned repetition both in process and subject matter, ideas of mapping and structures, detail and obsessive use of pattern, and multiplicity. Both artists work with a variety of printmaking techniques and also notions of the multiple and working in serial formats.
Victoria Burge is an artist living and working in Philadelphia, PA. Her prints and drawings focus on the architecture of line as it relates to systems of mapping. Inspired by the geometry of cartographic information, her pieces experiment with the reorganization of related patterns to generate abstracted topographies. Burge creates new visual systems that convey her explorations into memory, absence and the multiple dimensions and implications of space, both human and scientific.
Louise Kohrman is an artist living and working in Northampton, MA. Her studio practice focuses on drawing, etching and more recently, installation. Her work aims to harmonize the lines between aesthetics and transcendent experience through repetitive actions and serial formats. Delicacy, intricacy, and attention to detail serve as foundations of the work. Through meditative processes, subtle colors and luminous materials, she creates images that explore pattern, repetition, multiplicity, interconnectedness and the present moment. Her recent works discover a fascination with the circle as a vehicle for obtaining balance and harmony and is used to represent endlessness, but also completeness and perfection. Recent work also plays with ideas of obsession, accumulation and dispersion formally and conceptually.
