The Academy of Music, Meet Me at the Movies will present a Paul Newman Retrospective over five Sundays in January, showcasing the most unforgettable performances of this great American star who redefined the concept of the onscreen hero.

This is the classic cinematic version of Tennessee Williams's breathtaking play about a crazed southern family torn apart by greed. Larger-than-life patriarch Big Daddy (Burl Ives) lays dying, and the members of his brood clamor for the inheritance. Paul Newman is Brick, the alcoholic son struggling in the shadow of his powerful father, and Elizabeth Taylor is Maggie, Brick's lingerie-clad temptress of a wife who will do anything for the love of her cold husband.

An arrogant and amoral hustler haunts pool rooms to get a crack at bringing down Minnesota Fats. When he starts to have real feelings for a woman, he's faced with a dilemma.

Jan 17 Nobody's Fool 2:00PM
Paul Newman stars as Donald "Sully" Sullivan in Robert Benton's adaptation of the Richard Russo novel. A 60-year-old part-time laborer who lost touch with the wife and children he abandoned--along with most of his other responsibilities--years ago, he's a marginal but familiar figure in the small town he inhabits in upstate New York. He conducts a mild, ongoing flirtation with Toby Roebuck (Melanie Griffith), the wife of Carl (Bruce Willis), a local contractor who frequently employs Sully (and who Sully's currently suing for worker's compensation).

Sidney Lumet directs Paul Newman as an alcoholic lawyer whose once-promising legal career is on the skids and who gets and one last chance to prove himself in this tense courtroom drama.

Jan 31 Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 2:00PM
This 1969 Western encapsulates the genre, with dramatic chase scenes on horseback through breathtaking landscapes, daring robberies of banks and trains, true comradery between cowboys who would risk their lives for one another, and copious amounts of renegade charm. Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman) is the smart, savvy leader of The Hole in the Wall Gang, and his sidekick the Sundance Kid (Robert Redford) ranks among the best shooters the West has known.
