Easthampton-based collage artist Michael Sjostedt presents his first solo show, VANDAL, at Unite (202 Main St., Northampton) from March 8 to April 9, 2013. The show kicks off with an opening reception on Friday, March 8, from 6pm to 9pm. The featured DJ is Northampton’s Thorian Maxwell, host of WMUA’s Space Out Radio.
“VANDAL is inspired by the collage process, which can be a disruption of order,” said Sjostedt. “I enjoy subverting the intended message of an image to tell a different story, often in a tongue-in-cheek way.”
Sjostedt’s work gravitates toward the tricky dynamics of relationships between strangers from different backgrounds or perspectives. His pieces also focus on perceived internal dialogues of the “characters.”
He’s open to using a variety of paper sources for his work, but prefers books and magazines produced during mid-Century America. His work is often produced on small wood cubes using Mod Podge. He’ll also produce small poster-sized reproductions for the Unite show.
About Michael Sjostedt
Michael Sjostedt has lived in the Pioneer Valley for over 10 years. He works as PR/social media manager for a local publisher, author and interior designer. In 2012 he launched LOOP, an occasional pop-up shop and gallery featuring local artists and crafters whose work is both stylish and sustainable. Michael will continue producing collages for shows and possible editorial work in 2013. He’s also exploring screen-printing his images on t-shirts and tote bags.
