Written by Polish-American actress and musician, Ann Maggs, “Modjeska’s Voice” brings the Polish Shakespearean actress Helena Modjeska (1840-1909) back to the theatre where she starred in 1894, 1899 and 1900. Madame Modjeska was born in Poland when the country was ruled by Austria, Germany and Russia. She became a famous actress in Poland, then came to America, learned English and began an impressive acting career in this country. Her leading men included Maurice Barrymore, Edwin Booth and Otis Skinner. She had 35 plays in her repertoire, giving nearly 6,000 performances in 30 years across the United States, in England, France and Poland. The play gives vignettes of Modjeska’s life and scenes from her performances, and addresses the problems that she encountered when calling attention to the abuse of civil rights in Poland. Ann Maggs portrays Modjeska, Walter Carroll plays her husband Count Bozenta Chlapowski as well as some of her leading men in plays. There will be vocal and piano music in the performance.
