Thayer Tomlinson loves plants and trees. She also loves the space that slowing down to paint a plant’s details brings to her busy life. She calls her works ‘Botanical Watercolors’ and certainly they are. They are also studies in pattern and movement. Each painting exhibits a balance of leaf lines, color, and the forms found in her botanical subjects. Each painting is complete in itself, but one could imagine her paintings as an intertwining opulent fabric, simple and complex all at once.

Thayer’s work highlights the details of plants and trees often found just outside her door in Guilford Vermont. She creates botanical paintings that capture the everyday elements of the natural world and renders them with a sense of grace. Thayer is a painter, an energy consultant, a gardener and a mother—thus, is busy. Thayer says that painting gives her the time and space to shift to longer and slower movement and relish details that often are left unseen in the rush of life.

Thayer started painting early on, growing up in rural Wisconsin in a family of artists. She found her love in watercolor due to the atmospheric quality of the paint and the immediacy of results. Her watercolor paints and trays have been constant companions through her travels around the world and now reside happily in Vermont where they are frequently used at home and in the field.
