This class will cover a variety of fast and exciting approaches to making large (or small!) hollow animal sculpture in clay. Techniques play a vital role in subject interpretation, so we will employ a range, exploiting traditional pottery techniques such as pinch, coil, dowel and slab. No awkward internal armatures are necessary, minimal external support will be introduced, allowing you to work with immediacy and help in the successful creation and development of ideas.
Basic animal anatomy will be discussed as this knowledge should underpin all the decisions you make. However, it is not the goal to make realistic sculpture but to capture more the spirit, vigor and nature of the animal – to make an interpretation, not a copy.
Paper clay, with it's tremendous working strength and tolerance will be the clay of choice. Demonstrations will be on going and personal assistance and advice always available.
