Artist Barry Freedland exhibits his new project, Passive Engagement, in the ECA+ Gallery from April 6 to April 29 as part of REACH, a multi-city exhibition with over 30 contemporary practitioners. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, April 13, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. as part of Art Walk Easthampton and REACH Fest Day.
Barry Freedland uses robotics and machines as an agent for examining human identity. Passive Engagement, his interactive project on view at ECA+ Gallery investigates boundaries of artistic ownership and creative process through a series of robotically generated drawings. In previous work, the artist has included his personal identity through usage of thumbprints and DNA. Freedland will also be showing a series of sculptures at the Massachusetts Green High-Performance Computing Center (MGHPCC) during REACH entitled Morphologic Footpaths. This series utilizes signifiers of personal identity such as footprints.
Barry Freedland explores the morphologic structure of sculpture, drawing, and performance through the use of new technologies. His investigations include components of microcontrollers, prosthetics, genetics, and biometrics impact on aesthetics, consumption and engagement. Freedland is represented by Sundaram Tagore Gallery, New York. He has exhibited and lectured on his work nationally and internationally. Critical review of his work can be found in Art News, Metal Floss, New York Times, Asian Art News, Time Out, World Sculpture News and many others.
