Through a process of isolation, deconstruction, and reconstruction, Laura Radwell creates montages based on her own photography.

Her exhibition of “Photomontage” will be on display in the East Gallery of the Northampton Center for the Arts November 3-December 3, 2010.

The artist will host an opening reception on Sunday, November 7, 4-6pm.

Radwell is arrested by the unexpected and forceful visual power of details often overlooked—peeling paint, cracked walls and pavement, rust, light filtering through panes of dirty glass, machinery and infrastructure—as well as by hidden aspects of the landscape and the geometry of architectural elements. These make up her palette, the “pigments” from which she creates new images. Seeking synchronicity and compatibility within a given set of images is often elusive and challenging, but through Radwell’s process, transformation occurs, and habitual perception is altered.

"Having previously worked in a variety of media including batik, sculpture, calligraphy and graphic design, I began focusing on painting with oil and photomontage," says Radwell." While my family and business claimed most of my time for many years, I resumed the montage work in November 2009, deconstructing and recomposing elements of nature and the built environment, using digital technology. Information can now be captured in the real world, accessed in a digital environment, and then realized once again in a tangible form, transformed by the imagination. The work seems to have been patiently waiting and now spills out with force.”

Regular gallery hours at the Center for the Arts are Tuesday through Friday, from 11a.m. to 4p.m.
