Event Description

Acclaimed Springfield singer Sarah Elizabeth Charles brings her voice home, appearing as part of the New York City-based jazz quintet, Manner Effect. She performs with Caleb Curtis on saxophone, Logan Thomas on piano, PJ Roberts on bass, and Josh Davis on drums—all adventurous, talented and diverse young musicians dedicated to presenting original compositions and arrangements.

Manner Effect was born in 2009. After meeting on the NYC jazz scene, the fledgling band members united around a shared musical vision expressed in a dramatic editing and sculpting process for each song and a common desire to keep things “fresh and funky.” Weekly performances in Times Square allowed them to perfect a unique repertoire, an original blend of a wide variety of styles including jazz, R&B and pop.

“There is no band leader in our group,” says Charles. “No one person is doing the writing and telling us what to play. We’re doing our own writing and arrangements in a band way. Our idea is not necessarily centered on vocals… because the voice is being used differently. I improvise and enjoy scatting, and because of that, it allows us to have arrangements without lyrics.”

The individual members of Manner Effect have received many accolades. They have won international jazz competitions and Downbeat Magazine music awards. Their talents as instrumentalists and composers have brought them to esteemed national programs including the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Program, Jazz Aspen Snowmass Academy, and the Fred Hersch's Solo, Duo, Trio Workshop at Carnegie Hall.
