Event Description

A special sneak preview of episode three of We Shall Remain, a groundbreaking mini-series and provocative multi-media project presenting U. S. history from the Native American perspective, will be hosted by WGBY in conjunction with the Academy of Music Sunday, April 26 at 4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The screening of the acclaimed history series American Experience episode Trail of Tears will be followed by a discussion, and question and answer period, with We Shall Remain Executive Producer Sharon Grimberg.

A five-part documentary series American Experience: We Shall Remain is the product of a tremendous collaboration between Native and non-Native filmmakers, advisors, historians, and community leaders, placing Indian voices at the heart of the series. The first part airs on WGBY Monday, April 13 at 9pm.

Part 3, Trail of Tears, tells the story of thousands of Cherokee forced by federal troops from their homes in the Southeastern United States, driving them toward Indian Territory in Eastern Oklahoma. More than 4,000 died of disease and starvation along the way.

“The tale of European settlement of North America has been told countless times, but not from the perspective of the land’s original inhabitants,” explains executive producer Sharon Grimberg. “We Shall Remain tells the story, not from the point of view of the white people looking West, but of Native people looking East.”

Since Grimberg joined the staff at American Experience in 2000, films made for the series have won more than forty honors including Peabody Awards, Primetime Emmys, Writers Guild Awards and an Oscar nomination. Grimberg served as supervising producer of They Made America, a series on innovation based on award-winning writer Sir Harold Evans’ book of the same title. Grimberg plays a key role in the origination, development, acquisition, and editorial oversight of films for American Experience.

The event is sponsored by the Law Offices of Doherty, Wallace, Pillsbury & Murphy.

WGBY (www.wgby.org), a community supported public broadcasting organization, connects the people of western New England to events, ideas and each other to fulfill their aspirations, enrich their lives and improve their communities.
