This is an exhibition of digital and analog photography, sculpture, and film compiled by participants in Youth Action Coalition's Arts-for-Change program. In both the East and West galleries, youth make striking observations about what it means to be a citizen of their town, their country, and the world. The show opens with an Arts Night Out reception on Friday, February 10, 5-7pm. The public is invited to attend.
In the East Gallery, GirlsEyeView Ware shares writing, photography and collage in an effort to show new communities what it means to be a girl in Ware. Photos and murals deal with issues of perspectives and labels. By combining writing and photography the group hopes to begin to answer the question, "Who are the People of Ware?" In the same gallery, GirlsEyeView Amherst exhibits self-portrait images offering personal glimpses into their own lives and those of friends and family. They also feature collaborative works that illustrate the unity of young women plus a writing piece that responds to the many challenging questions arising from the exhibition's theme. E’town Rising completes the show in the East Gallery with a presentation of stunning triptychs that embody the photographers who created them. Members of the group have also taken to the streets to build photo journeys that reflect on the experience of living as a young person in Easthampton. In the West Gallery feature, Get Up Get Down shows found object sculpture as well as new works addressing notions of unity and community, both local and global. The new pieces use fire formed steel to shape dynamic sculpture and installation work that complement videos made by members of Video Vanguards. The gallery features collaborative video installations that make use of both physical space and creative works of film including the collectively-produced "Visions of a Liberated Future." Arts-for Change is a project of Youth Action Coalition that gives local youth opportunities to explore social justice through art. Free programs run in the afternoons/evenings during the school year in Amherst, Ware and Easthampton. |
