I work primarily in acrylic paint and dyed silk, shifting back and forth between the two, each medium augmenting and informing the other, both wonderful vehicles for expressing my passion for color.
Thematically, my paintings are meant as meditations--places where the viewer can enter into the realm of abstraction without fear, to discover, perhaps a new world, a new way of seeing or feeling, or a new way of being. In contrast to my work as a graphic designer, where the client's needs are foremost in my mind and the printed execution demands much planning, my paintings are an intensely personal and spontaneous expression. I often make use of typography, handwriting or unreadable "pseudo-handwriting", collage and scratching in my paintings. I think of these scribblings as whispers which are heard and felt, though not meant to be understood on a cognitive level.
A love of nature plays a large role in all my work. Since my recent move to Massachusetts, I have learned to embrace uncertainty, enjoy surprise and trust my intuition in both my life and art. I am continually amazed by the "happy accidents" that often take place.
I have studied painting, drawing, graphic design and advertising at the School of Visual Arts in New York, and since then with a number of other teachers at the Yellow Barn Studio, Glen Echo MD. I also have a BA from Bryn Mawr College and MA from Univ. of Pennsylvania, both in Art History. I am also a graphic designer. I have been a member of the Foundry Gallery in Washington, DC and am also a member of the OUTLOUD group of abstract painters that exhibit widely in the Washington area. I currently live in South Hadley.
