I grew up on Cape Cod where the combination of the local ecosystem, human and natural history, and active scientific community continue to inspire my work. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking with a minor in Drawing from Maine College of Art. Besides printmaking and drawing I also use woodworking, fiber arts, and other processes to make prints, drawings, books, small objects, and functional work.
Artist Statement
My artwork is a reflection of my connection to place and to the land. I am always trying to look harder at, become more knowledgeable about, and interact more consciously with my surroundings. Art making is part of my practice of looking closely at the natural world and trying to appreciate everything in it. Making art about place is also a way to remember and honor the landscapes I love and the time I spend in them.
In my artwork I aim to encourage viewers to interact consciously with each piece, and through this interaction to become more conscious of their own relationship to the landscape. I make prints, drawings, books, small objects, and functional work using materials such as paper, thread, wax, wool, stone, porcelain, wood, and plaster. The materials I use usually have a visible natural history that can be easily traced to an animal, plant, or mineral, thus connecting the work back to the land.
