Chivas Sandage is the author of Hidden Drive, a first book of poems, just published by Antrim House. Her poems and essays are forthcoming or recently appeared in Knockout Magazine, Evergreen Review, The Hartford Courant, Paradise Found (Levellers Press, ’12), Equality Texas, Naugatuck River Review, Drunken Boat, Morning Song: Poems for New Parents (St. Martin’s Press, ’11), and received a top ten award from Writer’s Digest. Her work has also appeared in the Artful Dodge, Daily Hampshire Gazette, Hampshire Life Magazine, Ms. Magazine, SmokeLong Quarterly, Upstreet, Verse, Manthology: Poems on the Male Experience (Univ. of Iowa Press, ‘06) and Same-Sex Marriage: The Moral and Legal Debate (Prometheus Books, ‘04).
As an Assistant Professor at Westfield State University, Sandage taught Composition, World Literature and Contemporary Cross-Cultural Literature. She earned an MFA in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts and a BA from Bennington College. The Northampton Arts Council has awarded artist grants for her writing, teaching and performance work.
Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, she primarily grew up in Houston, Texas. She lived in Northampton, Massachusetts and the Pioneer Valley from 1994-2010 and continues to teach weekly creative writing workshops in Florence at the Writers In Progress Studio. She’s at work on a memoir and a second collection of poems, also facilitates weekly workshops in Connecticut, works as a writing coach and consultant, blogs at csandage.com and writelikeariver.com, and lives with her wife and daughter in Collinsville, Connecticut.
