Artist Statement/Bio
Filmmaker, photographer, painter. Founder of Remodernist film movement, Vice-Chair of Cine Foundation International, founding partner of 9M3.org.

I don't like writing artist statements... so it's probably more useful to say what interests me and inspires me:

Andrei Tarkovsky’s films as well as his book Sculpting in Time, films by Bela Tarr, Michelangelo Antonioni, Yasujiro Ozu, Kenji Mizoguchi, Jia Zhang-ke, Aleksandr Dovzhenko, Wang Bing, Jonas Mekas, Chris Marker, Robert Bresson, Agnes Varda, Jean Epstein, Dimitri Kirsanoff, John Cassavetes, Bruce Baillie, Sharunas Bartas, Lav Diaz, Fred Kelemen, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Terrence Malick, the No-Wave film movement, Cinema of Transgression, erotic 1970's horror films by people like Jess Franco, Jean Rollin and Juan-Lopez Moctezuma, writings by Antonin Artaud, Dostoevsky, Rainer Maria Rilke, Knut Hamsun, Marcel Proust, Georges Bataille, and large amounts of early modernist thought/philosophy and art in general, mostly from between 1880 to 1925. Particularly interested in memory, duration, impressionism, sensuality/poetes maudits/Klimt/Die Brucke/Les Fauves and Japanese aesthetics.
Describe your organization or gallery
Organizations I've founded or am affiliated with:

Remodernist film movement:

Remodernist film calls for a return to emotional and spiritual meaning in cinema, as well as an emphasis on new ideas of narrative structure and subjectivity. Elements of No Wave Cinema, French New Wave, punk film, expressionist, spiritual and transcendental filmmaking, as well as Antonin Artaud's ideas on the Theatre of Cruelty helped led to this new film movement and they champion the works of Andrei Tarkovsky, Yasujiro Ozu, Robert Bresson, Jean Rollin, Michelangelo Antonioni, Jean Vigo, Amos Poe, Jean Epstein and Nicholas Ray among others, as well as Bela Tarr's film Satantango and Jean-Luc Godard's Hail Mary.

Cine Foundation International:

Cine Foundation International is London-based non-profit film company and human rights NGO "aiming to 'empower open consciousness through cinema'". The foundation was formed in December 2010 by British filmmaker Tobias Morgan, formerly the developer of "The Garage" on Mubi, American filmmaker Jesse Richards, founder of the Remodernist film movement, and South Korean film critic Blue Un Sok Kim.

On 3 January 2011, CFI announced their launch of a campaign of protest films and public actions calling for the release of of imprisoned Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi. "The campaign will include protest films that speak to human rights issues in Iran and throughout the world, six of which are commissioned feature-length, plus twenty shorts. Participating filmmakers may act anonymously or through pseudonyms since voicing their stories can be dangerous. The films, which will address themes of nation, identity, self, spiritual culture, censorship and imprisonment, will be aimed for public, web and various exhibition media". In January 2011, filmmakers Béla Tarr and Lav Diaz joined the foundation's Board of Directors, and in February Fred Kelemen joined the Board of Directors.

Also in January 2011, CFI deployed a video protest mechanism called WHITE MEADOWS (named for the Mohammad Rasoulof film of the same title) and developed by Ericson deJesus (of Yahoo! and frog design) at the request of the foundation. The video mechanism "allow(s) anyone in the world to record a short video statement about Panahi and Rasoulof. There will be an ESCAPE button at top, allowing quick exit for those in countries where recording a statement would be dangerous. There will an option to have the screen black, and soon, voice distortion. The video statements will be recorded as mp4s, giving them maximum transmedia capacity, which essentially makes them broadcastable from any device that can show video". Users can also use the mechanism to comment on how they would "like to see as an international response by the film industry", comment on the state of human rights in general, or to "report a human rights abuse to the world".

9M3.org

A Video-on-Demand platform and live streaming media site, formed as a partnership by Cine Foundation International, The International Alliance of Remodernist Filmmakers, SUBVEX, and The Experimental Film Society.
