Artist Statement/Bio
Katja Esser, a native of the Netherlands, is a multi disciplinary artist who has a BA in fine art from the Academy of Applied Arts in the Netherlands. She has exhibited in the Netherlands, Belgium, New York and Boston. In 1992 she began to expand her skills in mask and costume design, performance art, improvisational song, photography and ritual. Since 1995 she has facilitated the annual summer solstice ritual at America’s Stonehenge. In 1995 she worked with Eric Bornstein joining him in the First Night processions, Cambridge River Festival, Parks and Recreation, Fisherman’s Feast and corporate gigs. Since 2000 she has been part of the show ‘the Woman Who Outshone the Sun’ with Behind the Mask Theater doing school performances through Young Audiences. Katja has performed with her own performance pieces in many events throughout New England. She collaborated with videographer Gene Hall in an ambitious piece called ‘the Magic of Water in Motion’ and with sound artist and musician Ricardo Frota in ‘the Hidden Life of Trees’ in which she appears in a full tree costume that took her 1 ½ year to make. Her masks and rituals have appeared in the Boston Globe, Union Leader New Hampshire, many local papers and nation wide on discovery channel, the Boston Flower Show and Opera Providence.
