Kerstin Glaess is an oil painter based in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts.
Kerstin was born in 1992 at Whiteman AFB outside of Knob Knoster, Missouri. Growing up as a military child, Glaess bounced around the world until her family settled along the beautiful Emerald Coast in Niceville, FL. As an adult her lifestyle is similarly nomadic, and her global experiences influence her everyday life. To date she has lived in two continents, two countries, six states, and one U.S. territory.
Kerstin's life centered around creativity starting from a young age. Her mother taught her to draw, sew, and paint, while members of her family expressed themselves through other musical, performative, and fine art pursuits. Kerstin experimented with different mediums in her formative years including pottery, watercolor, color pencil, acrylic, embroidery, and folded paper. During her undergraduate university summers, Kerstin rediscovered traditional oil-painting (in 2008 she studied under portrait oil painter Sue Carol Knight), and developed her own style using palette knives pulling inspiration from alla prima impressionists.
The colors of Kerstin's works are energetic, the strokes highly textured, and the final products invite the viewer to traverse unique details, exploring emotions sparked by each piece. Mother-nature is her favorite muse: her subjects and compositions concentrate around landscapes, flora, fauna, and people, mostly from her childhood, international adventures., and impromptu en plein air moments. Kerstin paints custom commissions, sells original pieces, and works as a freelance artist and educator. She has received numerous awards in student categories. Her art can be found in homes, and businesses across North America.
Kerstin attended the University of Mississippi for her Bachelors in Psychology and English, and received her MFA in Cinema Arts from Brooklyn College.
