Artist Statement/Bio
When desire mingles with unreason a madness is born. This madness must be fabricated into reason through art. When desire is both intangible and physical it’s body may only be formally realized through a dialogue of action between the self and the other. It is in this performative conception of desire that desire is made visible. There, in the stark visibility of pure want, lies an honesty that is inescapable and grounding. It draws out the wild yearning from its place of unreason and in its newfound physicality names it reasonable.
The spirit of my art is manifest in the cutting simplicity of Kierkegaard’s statement, “Dread …[is]… a fear of what one desires and is a desire of what one fears.” (Palmer, 111). It is the beginning of an externalized dialogue between love and death— unremitting passion and barreling fright. Love is dread. Love is a form of death. It is a dissolution of the self into another. Death is a form of love. It is the dissolution of the self into the whole. When mated Love and death birth the nothingness of madness – the feral and unmitigated spirit. Either this is God or the loss of self inside an unreasonable mind. It is in this fluidity of sex and death, this territory of dread, that my performance, sculpture, and drawings live.
