There is a nocturnal insect peculiar to the North African desert whose scientific name is artistidae loftus, but is commonly called the "dark scribe". It trolls the night sand laying down a zigzag pattern of blue-black ink secreted by glands along its abdomen, working its nervous little habit until sunup drives it to the cool stratum below.
In 1987, a caravan of nomads, passing near a scribe colony, marveled at the intricate maze, millions of lines woven into a herringbone pattern, bleeding across the sand in all directions, finally congealing into a picture perfect likeness of Anwar Sadat in a James Lee of Hong Kong suit, accurate to the breast pocket monogram,
proving at last that an insect can be versed in
portraiture. I took from this that if a bug can draw, so can I.
