Artist Statement/Bio
My name is Dorene Pennell and I opened the doors to Valley Hands in the fall of 2008. I use the space at 342 Pleasant St as my studio creating floorcloths, murals and collages and some teaching. It's rewarding but here's a call for this space to be more and open the doors to the world. Thus came the idea to share my space - offering creative workshops by local artists, opportunities for artists to exhibit and demonstrate the 2nd Friday of each month and place your art on commission. Check us out!
Describe your organization or gallery
Valley Hands is a Creative Space designed to serve artists - the creative hands of the valley. We are filling a niche for area artists who don't have a visible, easily accessible location for their workshops or those who want to expand their client base into the Northampton area. Located in a storefront close to downtown at 342 Pleasant St., we are designed to be inviting, inspiring and fun! Afforble rent by the hour or daily to hold your Workshop, Event, Poetry Reading, Group Show... the possibilities are endless. Visit valleyhands.com
Thanks for your comments about my drawings and for the invitation. Despite what I'm sure is a friendly and low-key environment, I don't think I'd be able to do a drawing in front of people, but I'm flattered you asked!
I actually took a peak at your website already, and loved it! I definitely plan on participating in the "Watch art develop" gallery in the near future.
Hi Dorene, I think it would be great fun to work in the storefront. Woodblock printmaking lends itself to being "performed" by both artist and spectator. I have an exhibit up right now at Forbes, so need to finish that before I make new commitments, but let's talk next month. -ab
